What Else apart from Culture

Located on the southern tip of Pentecost Island, Point Cross village has several other offers for visitors.  White and black sandy beaches, crystal clear waters for reef snorkeling and surfs.  Being on the southern tip of the island, sunrise and sunsets are regular sightings.  The 30 meters waterfall is just another attraction.

Learning the way to live like a local and live like a local is always on the list.

Route to Reviving Culture and Custom

Christianity and western influenced have suppressed several cultural, custom and and traditional practices, resulting in several community elders either refrained or denied the opportunity to pass on custom to the future generation.  This is very true for Vanuatu and in several islands and communities today, traditional practices is no longer practiced.

South Pentecost, similar to many islands and parts of islands in Vanuatu has a rich custom.  However, Christianity and western influence has also resulted in the downfall of custom and traditional practices on South Pentecost.  This downfall has grew with generation until in the late 2000, it became a concern among the community of Point Cross (Poinkros village) on South Pentecost that 90 percent of the elders have gone, and if nothing is done immediately, the community will not be able to recover its custom.

In 2010, the community decided to revive its customary and cultural practices, by setting up a Cultural Committee which organized training to the youth as well as other community members.  As a means for revival, the community also conducted several custom dances and land diving ceremonies. In its continuous efforts to move forward, the Committee decided to contact the Vanuatu Cultural Center for information and guidance and the possible assistance in rebuilding the community's custom.

In 2012, the community decided to hold Annual Cultural Festivals as a route towards reviving  the community's custom and traditional practices.  This decision has been communicated to Vanuatu Cultural Center, and it has been decided that the first Cultural Festival for the community will be held at Point Cross village on South Pentecost on the 17th of November 2015 to mark the International Day of Culture.  The three days Festival will cover a range of activities from Custom Dances to food preparation, custom games and plays and art and crafts.

More information will be posted in the coming weeks and months.
